DRY EYE

Understanding Dry Eye: Symptoms, Causes, and Solutions

What is Dry Eye?

Dry Eye Syndrome is a prevalent condition where individuals experience discomfort due to a lack of sufficient or poor-quality tears. Common symptoms include:

  • Redness
  • Dryness
  • Scratchiness
  • Blurred Vision
  • Foreign Body Sensation
  • Burning
  • Sandy/Gritty Feeling

Dry Eye Syndrome, also known as keratitis sicca, arises from an imbalance in the components of tears, which include moisture from the lacrimal glands, oils from the meibomian glands, and mucins from the goblet cells. Disruptions in any of these components can lead to dry eye.

Causes of Dry Eye

Several factors can contribute to dry eye syndrome:

  • Insufficient Tear Production: Often due to inflammation of the lacrimal glands.
  • Poor Tear Quality: Typically caused by meibomian gland dysfunction.
  • Medications: Certain drugs can lead to ocular dryness.
  • Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations can affect tear production and quality.
